Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue of Sustainability focuses on strategic approaches for developing sustainable product-service systems (PSS) as innovative solutions to address environmental and social challenges. PSS integrates products and services into unified offerings, prioritizing resource efficiency, value creation, and reduced environmental impact. This Issue brings together interdisciplinary research examining business models, design methodologies, policy frameworks, and stakeholder engagement strategies essential for sustainable PSS implementation. Key themes include the integration of lifecycle management (LCM) to assess and optimize environmental performance throughout a system’s life span, and the adoption of performance-based contracts (PBCs) that align provider incentives with sustainability outcomes rather than product ownership. The role of digital technologies, circular economy principles, and access-based consumption models is explored in detail. Through empirical studies and case analyses from sectors such as manufacturing, transportation, and healthcare, contributors demonstrate how sustainable PSS can drive innovation while meeting environmental and user needs. This Issue also addresses challenges such as organizational transformation, user acceptance, and the development of robust sustainability performance metrics. Emphasizing long-term thinking and systemic change, this collection provides valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers aiming to support sustainable development through strategic PSS adoption and integration.
