Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue comprises selected papers focused on sustainability in environmental education. Environmental education focused on sustainability (EEFS) utilizes a holistic approach to support learning of the interconnected scientific, sociocultural, economic, moral, and political dimensions associated with environmental and sustainability issues. Seeking to be action-oriented, EEFS facilitates learners to identify, understand, investigate, communicate about, and resolve environmental conservation and human development concerns. Desired outcomes from EEFS efforts can include: 1) learners’ understanding of scientific concepts associated with environmental and sustainability issues; 2) recognizing the interconnectedness among themselves, other people, ecosystems, and the environment; 3) considering diverse perspectives of those impacted by environmental and sustainability issues; 4) developing an environmental ethic and skills (e.g., effective communication and critical thinking) necessary for participating as democratic citizens; and 5) reflectively engaging in pro-environmental decision making and behaviors. EEFS can be implemented in diverse contexts to include formal (K—post-secondary), non-formal, and informal learning environments, and through various pedagogical approaches (e.g., place-based and socioscientific issues (SSI) teaching). Papers submitted for this Special Issue will align with and advance the EEFS scholarship and can include empirical studies (e.g., those that investigate EEFS interventions and/or the learning processes associated with EEFS experiences) or conceptual pieces. We are particularly interested in papers that address how educators can prepare students to competently navigate contentious environmental issues (e.g., climate change, introduction and reintroduction of species, private and public land use practices) in a manner that promotes sustainability.  Papers selected for this Special Issue will be rigorously peer reviewed with the intent of providing significant contributions to the environmental education field.
