Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Planning plays a central role in many aspects of population health. One such aspect is the ways in which mobility can affect health and the sustainability of cities. This Special Issue aims to bring together researchers studying the nuanced relationship between mobility and general health and welfare. Topics for submissions could include sustainable urban mobility, the impact of urban design on travel behavior, or technological innovations in transportation that lead to attaining sustainability or health goals, as well as other topics that fit with the scope of this Special Issue. While research has been presented on these topics separately, a Special Issue that combines these topics in a central, easily accessible journal outlet would be beneficial and unique.

As such, the overall scope of this Special Issue includes the following relevant, albeit not exclusive, themes:

  • Sustainable urban mobility;
  • How various forms of mobility can impact health and well-being;
  • How different urban designs affect travel behavior;
  • How various aspects of planning (transportation, housing, environmental, and economic) can have a direct or indirect impact on public health;
  • Emerging technological advancements and innovations in mobility and their affects on sustainability and/or public health;
  • Addressing equity and accessibility issues around urban form and mobility;
  • Examining challenges around implementation and opportunities for collaboration and innovation in order to address the connection between mobility and health.

In a world of constant change and uncertainty, placing the linkage between mobility and health within the umbrella of sustainability would help guide future research and actions. Keeping the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in mind, research that is holistic and has implications for long-term resilience and sustainability is key to progress and in making our cities more livable and desirable. This would be especially relevant to Goal 3—Good Health and Well-being and Goal 11—Sustainable Cities and Communities, but detailed examinations of the nuanced factors within the other SDGs would contribute to our knowledge of the links between factors that are not obvious or directly considered, such as mobility.
