Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, the world has witnessed an alarming rise in extreme hydrometeorological events, including devastating floods in Libya and Pakistan, prolonged droughts across the Horn of Africa, and unprecedented heatwaves in South Asia and Southern Europe. These events are becoming more frequent and intense, driven by the accelerating impacts of climate change. The consequences are particularly severe in poorly gauged regions, where the lack of reliable observational data hampers early warning systems, risk assessment, and disaster preparedness.
Understanding and forecasting hydrometeorological extremes in these data-scarce areas represent a pressing scientific and humanitarian challenge. Traditional monitoring networks are often sparse or non-existent in vulnerable regions, making it difficult to model and predict events with sufficient accuracy. However, recent advances in Earth observation technologies, remote sensing, and data-driven modeling, including machine learning, offer promising alternatives to fill these gaps.
This Special Issue aims to bring together interdisciplinary research that leverages innovative forecasting techniques to improve hydrometeorological risk management in poorly gauged basins. We invite contributions that explore the integration of satellite data, climate models, hydrological simulations, and socio-economic vulnerability assessments to enhance water security and resilience. This Special Issue underpins multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6, 11, and 13).
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to,
- Remote sensing applications for flood and drought forecasting;
- AI and machine learning in hydrometeorological modeling;
- Data assimilation techniques for ungauged or poorly gauged basins;
- Climate change attribution and scenario analysis;
- Community-based early warning systems and policy frameworks.
By focusing on the regions that are most at risk and least equipped, this Special Issue seeks to advance both scientific understanding and practical solutions for sustainable water management under climate stress. It aligns closely with Sustainability’s mission to promote sustainability through interdisciplinary research and innovation.
