ICON-LA Landscape architecture: Towards sustainable urban environment: water landscapes in the time of globalisation

This international scientific conference in landscape architecture in St.-Petersburg, Russia, is devoted to the urban water landscapes in the time of globalisation. The questions which will be discussed range from the influence of densification and related urban problems to water landscapes, consequences of climate change on coastal urban ecosystems, design of sustainable waterfronts, restoration and conservation of urban rivers, lakes, streams and marine ecosystems.

We call upon international and local landscape architects, the academic community, city administrations and other appropriate stakeholders to share visions and innovative approaches that can help create a new generation of sustainable urban water landscapes.

This will be number 13 in a series of very successful conferences in landscape architecture organised in St. Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia. Over the years, these conferences have attracted established names within the international academic community and landscape architecture profession.

St. Petersburg is particularly known for its historic water landscapes and it’s often called as the Venice of the North. There are also quite a lot of good examples related to protection of urban environments from flooding such as St. Petersburg Dam as well as interesting recent waterfront restoration projects.

The format of this year is different from all previous conferences. It will be one full day of oral presentations and discussions which will take place in Saint-Petersburg State Forest Technical University. There will be also an opportunity for the extra day of the excursion to see famous historic parks and gardens of St. Petersburg.
