Chemistry at Surfaces: Key Aspects in Materials Design and Catalysis

Dear Colleagues,

Surface Chemistry is a pivotal topic at the basis of many disciplines, such as catalysis, sensors, tribology, electrochemistry, biotechnologies, etc. In the context of materials science, surfaces are key to controlling both functional properties and interaction with the environment, and therefore, a fundamental understanding of the structural and chemical properties of surfaces, as well as the ability to design their features at the nanoscale are the cornerstone for the development of a wide gamut of applied materials.

The close intertwining between surfaces and applications is central in many new technologies that are being developed to face global challenges such as CO₂ capture and storage, production of clean energy and its efficient conversion, and environmental remediation, to name just a few.

This Special Issues aims to collect original research works, reviews, and perspectives on the multifaceted topic of the surface chemistry of materials. Potential topics of this Special Issue include but are not limited to heterogeneous catalysis encompassing thermal catalysis and (photo)electrocatalysis, unconventional synthesis methods able to control morphology, advances in surface sensitive characterization techniques, materials with functional surfaces (including thin films, 2D materials shape controlled materials, etc.), and the study of complex interfaces (bio-interfaces, heterostructures, multiphasic materials, advanced composites).

The occasion behind this Special Issue is the conference “Chemistry at Surfaces: Key Aspects in Materials Design and Catalysis, an international Workshop in honor of Elio Giamello and Gaetano Granozzi” (https://paracat.eu/wp/workshop-on-chemistry-at-the-surface/), which aims to celebrate the important scientific contributions by these researchers to surface and materials chemistry and, same as this Special Issue, to provide an updated and comprehensive perspective on the most recent trends and new discoveries in materials science on the study of surfaces and their properties.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Surfaces is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
