Special Issue "Surface Analysis of Thin Films and Coatings"
A special issue of Surfaces (ISSN 2571-9637).
Deadline for manuscript submissions: closed (31 July 2019).
Interests: Use of advanced materials characterisation techniques to determine and understand the composition, bonding and nanostructure of thin films and coatings; Techniques employed include XPS, AES, XRD, TEM, SEM, AFM, FIB-SEM; Single layer, multilayer and nanocomposite inorganic thin films and coatings for wear/corrosion resistance or functional applications; Most thin films and coatings are deposited by vacuum methods, such as sputtering, evaporation or CVD
Thin films and coatings are ubiquitous in the modern world. The spectrum of materials employed, applications, integrated structures, and surface functionalities of thin films and coatings is constantly developing and diversifying. Recent hot topics in the field include ultra-thin, multifunctional, self-healing, and biomimetic coatings.
In order to fully characterise and understand the process-structure-properties relationship for new thin films and coatings, a wide range of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques are employed. New developments in such methods include the introduction of new analytical techniques or advances in existing techniques, i.e., in-situ measurements, ultra-high spatial or spectral resolution analysis, and statistical methods to reduce data complexity or extract important masked features.
The aim of this Special Issue is to offer an open-access forum where researchers in the field can present significant new results on the application of existing surface analytical techniques to novel thin film and coating materials, structures or surface functionalities, or advances in analytical techniques that are important to the field of thin films and coatings. All material classes, application areas, and relevant surface analytical techniques important to thin film and coating technologies are welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Surfaces is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
