Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This special issue invites original research articles that examine the diverse integration and settlement experiences of immigrant and international students across educational systems and global contexts. As student migration continues to rise globally, there is a pressing need to deepen our understanding of how these students navigate the complex intersections of education, migration, and long-term settlement. The issue aims to advance scholarly and policy insights into the challenges and opportunities students encounter in pursuing academic success, fostering social belonging, entering the labour market, and planning their post-education pathways—including decisions about staying, moving, or returning—as part of their broader settlement trajectories.

We welcome papers that focus on students at all levels of education—from primary, secondary, to post-secondary and graduate studies—and consider how institutional practices, immigration policies, and social environments shape their integration experiences and settlement outcomes. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): barriers and facilitators to academic success; experiences of discrimination and racism; access to student and settlement services; transitions to the labour market; pathways to permanent residency and citizenship; and evolving identities and transnational ties. Contributions that apply intersectional, comparative, or longitudinal perspectives are welcomed.

This special issue seeks to bring together interdisciplinary scholarship from across the social sciences, including sociology, education, migration studies, and political science, as well as community-engaged research that centres the voices and agency of immigrant and international students. Both empirical (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods) and theoretical submissions are welcome.
