Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

When 5G became commercially available, it paved the way for various cutting-edge technologies that power smart cities, precision farming, the Internet of Things (IoT), robots, and industrial automation. Currently, the focus has now shifted toward the development of beyond 5G and 6G technologies. Beyond 5G and 6G technologies are projected to push 5G capabilities even further, allowing millions of linked devices and apps to operate seamlessly with trust, low latency, ultra-reliability, and a high bandwidth. Applications are becoming an increasingly significant aspect of social infrastructure and people's daily lives. Hologram-type communications (HTCs), wireless cognition, high-resolution sensing, digital twins in industry and medicine/healthcare, and accurate localization are some of the potential innovative applications envisioned in 2030. To realize such a vision, 6G networks will need data rates in the order of terabits per second (Tb/s) and ultra-low latency of less than 1 ms. That is more than 100 times quicker than fifth-generation (5G) networks, with ultra-low latency and very high information timing precision. This is also expected to drive the Internet of Everything, with 10 million connections per km2.

This Special Issue of Signals aims to be a forum for the presentation of new, improved, and developing techniques in the recent advances of wireless communications, especially for beyond 5G and 6G technologies.

This Special Issue will accept unpublished original papers and comprehensive reviews with topics related to the following areas:

  • Applications of AI for optimizing wireless communication systems, including channel models, channel state estimation, beamforming, channel coding, and signal processing;
  • Next-generation wireless network architectures;
  • Circuit systems for next-generation wireless communication systems;
  • Network and information security for next-generation wireless communication systems;
  • PHY, MAC, and cross-layer design for next-generation wireless communication systems;
  • IoT application with ultra-low latency and ultra-reliability requirements;
  • Massive machine-type communications for IoT;
  • Smart communication protocols and algorithms for resilient mobile networks.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Signals is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
