2018 IEEE International Conference on Metrology for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage

The word metrology has a long tradition, deriving from the Greek word for measure. Our knowledge of any thing is complete only when it can be expressed in numbers. Measurements play a fundamental role in every field of investigation, and present day scientific and technological progress has resulted from progress in the field of measurements. Metrology, the science of measurements, includes both theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, whatever their uncertainty, and regardless of field of science or technology in which they occur. Consequently, the field of the valorisation, characterisation and preservation of cultural heritage is also deeply related to metrological issues in terms of the collection, interpretation and validation of data collected using different analytical, physical–chemical and mechanical techniques, digital technologies, new ICT tools, etc. Measurements deriving from the large number of analytical methodologies and tools available today, including molecular and elemental spectroscopic techniques, chemometrics, chemical reactivity and modeling, etc., are of interest for the conference. Data on the impacts of natural and anthropogenic environmental stressors, the decay pathways of different materials in the surrounding environment, the development of new remediation processes such as cleaning, consolidation, rehabilitation, etc., that is based on chemical knowledge will be considered.
