Dear Colleagues,

Advanced technologies for building energy efficiency and energy conservation are rapidly transforming the way buildings are designed, operated, and retrofitted. As buildings remain among the largest contributors to global energy demand and emissions, the deployment of high-performance systems and intelligent control strategies is essential to reduce consumption, improve flexibility, and maintain healthy and comfortable indoor environments—particularly under increasingly frequent extreme weather conditions.

This Special Issue, “Advanced Technologies for Building Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation”, aims to showcase cutting-edge research, innovative solutions, and demonstrated applications that enable substantial reductions in energy use while supporting decarbonization targets. It provides a platform for researchers, engineers, architects, and industry practitioners to share advances in efficient building systems, smart operation, next-generation materials, and integrated design approaches that improve performance across the building life cycle.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Next-generation HVAC systems and ultra-high-efficiency heat pumps.
  • Low-GWP and natural refrigerants and advanced refrigeration cycles.
  • Advanced ventilation and indoor air quality solutions with energy recovery.
  • Smart controls, automation, fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), and predictive operation.
  • Building energy management systems (BEMS), IoT-enabled monitoring, and edge/cloud analytics.
  • Artificial intelligence and data-driven optimization for building operation and maintenance.
  • Advanced building envelope technologies (dynamic façades, high-performance glazing, aerogels, vacuum insulation panels).
  • Passive and hybrid strategies for load reduction (shading, natural ventilation, thermal mass optimization).
  • Building-integrated renewables (PV, BIPV, PVT, solar thermal, geothermal) and integration with storage.
  • Thermal energy storage technologies (PCM, thermochemical storage) and demand-side management.
  • Digital twins, calibrated simulation, and model predictive control (MPC).
  • Grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEB), demand response, and flexibility quantification.
  • Commissioning, continuous commissioning, and measurement and verification (M&V) of savings.
  • Deep energy retrofit methodologies and scalable solutions for existing building stock.
  • Life cycle assessment (LCA), embodied/operational carbon trade-offs, and cost-optimal design.
  • Real-world case studies with measured performance and post-occupancy evaluation.

We welcome original research articles, reviews, and high-quality case studies that advance the science and practice of energy-efficient and energy-conserving buildings.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sci is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
