Dear Colleagues,
It is a great pleasure to introduce this Special Issue of Remote Sensing, honoring Professor Carmine Serio and its 45 years of pioneering work in Fourier Spectroscopy and satellite-borne FTIR spectrometers, which has profoundly shaped Earth Observation (EO). Measurements in the infrared (IR) domain are crucial for accurately retrieving vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, trace gases, and clouds and aerosol properties—data essential for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and climate monitoring. Professor Serio played a pivotal role in the development and exploitation of flagship high-resolution atmospheric sounders like IMG, I-BEST, REFIR, IASI, and MTG-IRS, which defined the current state-of-the-art in quantitative remote sensing.
This Special Issue aims to capture the transition to next-generation satellite missions, showcasing technological and methodological advancements in far-to-near IR spectroscopy. It is highly relevant to the scope of Remote Sensing, focusing on the latest in EO technology and advanced retrieval algorithms.
We specifically invite research contributions that utilize or prepare for revolutionary new capabilities: the enhanced resolution of IASI-NG, the first geostationary hyperspectral sounding capability provided by MTG-IRS, and the groundbreaking far-infrared coverage of the FORUM mission. Submissions should also address the integration of these data with current systems, including hyperspectral imagers like PRISMA and broadband imagers like SEVIRI.
We invite original research and review articles on themes including:
- Next-Generation Profiling: Data exploitation, retrieval algorithms, and initial results from IASI-NG and MTG-IRS.
- Far-Infrared Science: Studies simulating or analyzing data related to the FORUM and PREFIRE missions and the Earth's energy budget.
- Hyperspectral Integration: Techniques combining high-resolution sounders (IASI/AIRS/CrIS) with imagers (MODIS, AVHRR, PRISMA, SEVIRI).
- Radiative Transfer: Innovations in forward models and spectroscopy to reduce uncertainty in quantitative retrievals.
This collection is a testament to the scientific rigor exemplified by Professor Serio, whose legacy continues to inspire the future of atmospheric remote sensing.
