Dear Colleagues,
The relationship between Judaism and Christianity constitutes one of the most significant and enduring subjects in the study of religion. Both traditions emerged from the rich and diverse intellectual, theological, and social landscape of Second Temple Judaism, sharing foundational scriptures, interpretive traditions, and historical experiences while gradually developing distinct religious identities. Over the course of two millennia, the encounters between Judaism and Christianity have shaped theological discourse, biblical interpretation, communal identities, ethics, politics, and cultural history. Recent advances in biblical studies, archaeology, Second Temple Judaism, rabbinic literature, and the history of Jewish–Christian relations continue to deepen our understanding of these complex interactions and challenge long-standing assumptions about the origins and development of both traditions.
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue of Religions, Theological and Historical Encounters Between Judaism and Christianity.
This Special Issue aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for exploring the historical, theological, textual, and cultural encounters between Judaism and Christianity from antiquity to the present. It seeks to bring together scholars from biblical studies, Jewish studies, Christian origins, theology, history, archaeology, and related disciplines to examine the diverse ways in which these traditions have influenced, interpreted, challenged, and defined one another. By encouraging dialogue across disciplinary boundaries, this Special Issue seeks to advance scholarship on the shared origins, divergent trajectories, and continuing interactions between Judaism and Christianity.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and review articles are welcome. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Judaism and the origins of Christianity;
- Second Temple Judaism and early Christian thought;
- Jewish and Christian biblical interpretation;
- Rabbinic literature and early Christianity;
- Theological continuity and divergence between Judaism and Christianity;
- Historical encounters between Jewish and Christian communities;
- Medieval and early modern Jewish–Christian relations;
- Archaeological perspectives on Judaism and Christianity;
- Modern Jewish–Christian dialogue and interfaith relations;
- Reception history of biblical and post-biblical texts;
- Comparative theology and religious identity;
- Methodological approaches to Jewish–Christian studies.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-anonymized peer-review process. Religions is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
