Dear Colleagues,
Since the advent of penicillin, antibiotics have saved countless lives. However, accompanying their large-scale production and widespread use, substantial quantities of antibiotic parent compounds and their metabolites are continuously released into the environment through various pathways, including pharmaceutical wastewater, human and animal excreta, and aquaculture. As typical "emerging contaminants," the persistent discharge of antibiotics not only disrupts ecological balance but, more critically, drives the emergence and dissemination of environmental bacterial resistance, posing a severe challenge to global public health security.
This Special Issue aims to gather cutting-edge research on antibiotics in environmental matrices (water, soil, air, and biota). We will focus on the development of highly sensitive analytical methods for the precise identification of trace antibiotics and their transformation products; explore efficient, green, and sustainable pollution control technologies (such as advanced oxidation processes, adsorption, and biological treatment), and systematically assess the ecotoxicological effects of antibiotics on non-target organisms as well as their potential ecological risks. Through interdisciplinary research, we hope to provide a scientific basis for understanding the environmental behaviour of antibiotics, evaluating their long-term risks, and developing effective remediation strategies, thereby collectively addressing this global environmental and health challenge.
We cordially invite submissions of original Research Articles, Reviews, Short Communications, and Perspective pieces. Manuscripts should be innovative, scientifically sound, and rigorous. Authors are requested to clearly indicate the relevance of their manuscript to the theme of this Special Issue upon submission. All manuscripts will undergo the journal's standard peer-review process.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Pollutants is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
