Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue focuses on the role of microalgae as a versatile technological platform in the context of sustainable development and the transition toward a circular economy. Its aim is to integrate fundamental and applied research covering the development, optimization, and implementation of microalgal technologies at pilot and industrial scales. Particular emphasis is placed on bridging the gap between laboratory research and real-world applications, including technological, economic, and environmental aspects. The scope includes the design and optimization of microalgae cultivation systems, such as photobioreactors and open pond systems. An important focus is the integration of microalgal technologies with wastewater treatment, nutrient recovery, and bioenergy and biofuel production. This Special Issue also addresses biorefinery approaches for microalgal biomass and the production of high-value products such as proteins, lipids, pigments, and biopolymers. Consideration is given to process efficiency, including techno-economic and environmental assessments (e.g., LCA). Contributions presenting case studies and real-scale implementation of microalgal technologies are particularly encouraged. This Special Issue will also cover challenges related to process scale-up, standardization, and regulatory aspects. Overall, this Special Issue aims to provide a platform for knowledge exchange between academia and industry, supporting the development and commercialization of innovative microalgal technologies.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Phycology is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
