Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Glial cells have emerged as central orchestrators of neuroimmune communication, extending far beyond their classical supportive roles to actively shape neural function, systemic homeostasis, and disease trajectories. Advances in single-cell profiling, imaging, and functional genomics have revealed an unexpected diversity of specialized glial subtypes, including disease-associated microglia, context-dependent astrocyte phenotypes, NG2-glia, oligodendrocyte lineage cells, and peripheral glial populations, each contributing in distinct ways to inflammation, metabolism, synaptic plasticity, and tissue repair.

This Special Issue aims to bridge fundamental glial biology with translational and therapeutic innovation, highlighting how insights into glial heterogeneity can reshape our understanding of disease mechanisms and open new avenues for intervention. We welcome contributions that span molecular discovery, experimental models, biomarker development, and early-phase clinical translation, with particular interest in work that explores glial–immune interfaces in chronic pain, neurodegeneration, neuropsychiatric disorders, fatigue syndromes, metabolic and autoimmune diseases, and brain–body communication.

By integrating basic mechanistic science with applied and clinical perspectives, this collection seeks to accelerate the development of glia-targeted diagnostics and therapeutics—from precision pharmacology and immunomodulation to digital biomarkers and personalized care strategies—positioning specialized glia at the forefront of next-generation neuroimmune medicine.

Manuscript Submission Information
