Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Nanotechnologies in the textiles industry have demonstrated significant potential to enhance functional performance across a variety of technical applications. This Special Issue will delve into cutting-edge developments in this field, focusing on the applications, potential benefits, and challenges associated with nanotechnologies in technical textiles.
Background and history: The term "nano" originates from the Greek word meaning "dwarf" and refers to a size of one billionth. Specifically, one nanometre is one billionth of a metre (10−9 m). Historical references to nanotechnology date back to the late 1950s when R. Feynman delivered a lecture titled "There is Plenty of Room at the Bottom" at the American Physical Society meeting. Since then, there has been substantial growth in nanotechnology applications for textiles, incorporating nanomaterials or nanoscale surface treatments into fibres, yarns, and fabrics to enhance existing properties or introduce new functionalities. Due to their large surface area relative to their size, nanoparticles can exert significant effects even at low concentrations. The market for nanotechnology in textiles has seen remarkable growth and is projected to reach USD 34 billion by 2030, with a compounded annual growth rate of 25%. The most widely explored areas of nanotechnology include functional textiles, such as antimicrobial nanocoatings and finishes, moisture absorption, temperature regulation, conductivity for wearable electronics, and UV protection.
Aim and scope: This Special Issue explores recent advancements and sustainable developments in nanotechnologies and nanoengineering for the technical textiles sector. This includes topics such as nanofibres, nanocoatings, nanoemulsions, nanostructures, and nanotubes that enhance textile performance.
Specific subtopics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Research on the development of novel nanofibres, nanomaterials, and approaches for material characterisation in technical textiles and high-performance applications.
- Technical reports on advancements in innovative methods to improve physical durability (strength, repeated usage, longevity), functionality (hydrophobicity, antibacterial properties, sensors, wearable electronics, drug release), and comfort (wicking and thermal regulation).
- Studies focusing on environmentally friendly approaches and processes utilising nanotechnologies, along with lifecycle assessment methods to monitor the benefits and impacts of nanoparticles on the environment.
- Investigations into innovative applications and the challenges of implementing nanotechnologies in the fashion and technical textile sectors, such as health concerns, safety, and scalability.
Submissions may include research articles, reviews, short communications, and letters.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nanomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
