The Forty-Sixth Euro Congress on Drug Synthesis and Analysis: Snapshot

Molecules 2017, 22(11), 1848; https://doi.org/10.3390/molecules22111848

The 46th EuroCongress on Drug Synthesis and Analysis (ECDSA-2017) was arranged within the celebration of the 65th Anniversary of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia from 5–8 September 2017 to get together specialists in medicinal chemistry, organic synthesis, pharmaceutical analysis, screening of bioactive compounds, pharmacology and drug formulations; promote the exchange of scientific results, methods and ideas; and encourage cooperation between researchers from all over the world. The topic of the conference, “Drug Synthesis and Analysis,” meant that the symposium welcomed all pharmacists and/or researchers (chemists, analysts, biologists) and students interested in scientific work dealing with investigations of biologically active compounds as potential drugs. The authors of this manuscript were plenary speakers and other participants of the symposium and members of their research teams. The following summary highlights the major points/topics of the meeting.

Multifunctional Nanomaterials: Design, Synthesis and Application Properties

Molecules 2017, 22(2), 243; https://doi.org/10.3390/molecules22020243

The immense scope of variation in dendritic molecules (hyper-branching, nano-sized, hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, rigidity/flexibility balance, etc.) and their versatile functionalization, with the possibility of multivalent binding, permit the design of highly improved, novel materials. Dendritic-based materials are therefore viable alternatives to conventional polymers. The overall aim of this work is to show the advantages of dendronization processes by presenting the synthesis and characterization of three different dendronized systems: (I) microbeads of functionalized chitosan; (II) nanostructuration of polypropylene surfaces; and (III) smart dendritic nanogels. The particular properties yielded by these systems could only be achieved thanks to the dendronization process.

The Eighth Central European Conference “Chemistry towards Biology”: Snapshot

Molecules 2016, 21(10), 1381; https://doi.org/10.3390/molecules21101381

The Eighth Central European Conference “Chemistry towards Biology” was held in Brno, Czech Republic, on August 28–September 1, 2016 to bring together experts in biology, chemistry and design of bioactive compounds; promote the exchange of scientific results, methods and ideas; and encourage cooperation between researchers from all over the world. The topics of the conference covered “Chemistry towards Biology”, meaning that the event welcomed chemists working on biology-related problems, biologists using chemical methods, and students and other researchers of the respective areas that fall within the common scope of chemistry and biology. The authors of this manuscript are plenary speakers and other participants of the symposium and members of their research teams. The following summary highlights the major points/topics of the meeting.

Treatment with Akebia Saponin D Ameliorates Aβ1–42-Induced Memory Impairment and Neurotoxicity in Rats

Molecules 2016, 21(3), 323; https://doi.org/10.3390/molecules21030323

Amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) is known to be directly associated with the progressive neuronal death observed in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, effective neuroprotective approaches against Aβ neurotoxicity are still unavailable. In the present study, we investigated the protective effects of Akebia saponin D (ASD), a typical compound isolated from the rhizome of Dipsacus asper Wall, on Aβ1–42-induced impairment of learning and memory formation and explored the probable underlying molecular mechanisms. We found that treatment with ASD (30, 90 or 270 mg/kg) significantly ameliorated impaired spatial learning and memory in intracerebroventricularly (ICV) Aβ1–42-injected rats, as evidenced by a decrease tendency in escape latency during acquisition trials and improvement in exploratory activities in the probe trial in Morris water maze (MWM). Further study showed that ASD reversed Aβ1–42-induced accumulation of Aβ1–42 and Aβ1–40 in the hippocampus through down-regulating the expression of BACE and Presenilin 2 accompanied with increased the expression of TACE, IDE and LRP-1. Taken together, our findings suggested that ASD exerted therapeutic effects on Aβ-induced cognitive deficits via amyloidogenic pathway.

Meeting Reports and Abstracts: Symposium on Applications of Porphyrins in Medicine and the Fourth School for Young Scientists on the Chemistry of Porphyrins and Related Compounds Ivanovo 2000

Molecules 2000, 5(12), 1461-1514; https://doi.org/10.3390/51201461

The Fourth School for Young Scientists on Chemistry of Porphyrins and Related Compounds Ivanovo 2000 and the Symposium "Application of Porphyrins in Medicine" were held at the facilities of Ivanovo State University of Chemistry and Technology and the Institute of the Solution Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Ples (Ivanovo region, Russia) from August 21 to August 27, 2000. About a hundred lecturers and young scientists from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Italy and Poland took part in the various sessions of the School and Symposium. The main centers (Moscow, Ivanovo, St-Petersburg, etc.) and directions of porphyrin investigation were well represented by Russian lecturers. The School program included lectures on synthesis, physico-chemical, coordination and application properties of porphyrins, phthalocyanines and related macroheterocyclic compounds. [...]
