Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as a revolutionary class of nanomaterials with exceptional structural, physicochemical, and mechanical properties. Their atomically thin nature, tunable surface chemistry, and well-defined interlayer structures offer unique opportunities for membrane-based separation and energy conversion applications. Over the past decade, tremendous progress has been made in designing and fabricating 2D-material-based membranes, including graphene oxide, MXenes, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs), and beyond. These membranes have demonstrated superior selectivity, permeability, and stability, pushing the boundaries of conventional membrane technologies in water treatment, gas separation, ion sieving, and environmental remediation.
This Special Issue on “Two-Dimensional Materials and Membranes Technologies” aims to gather high-quality original research articles and reviews that highlight recent advances in the design, synthesis, modification, and application of 2D material-based membranes. Particular attention will be given to works that explore fundamental transport mechanisms, structural-property relationships, scalable fabrication methods, and integration of 2D membranes into practical separation and energy systems.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Synthesis and structural engineering of novel 2D nanomaterials for membrane applications
- 2D membranes for gas separation, water purification, desalination, and ion separation
- Nanoconfined transport phenomena and selectivity mechanisms in 2D channels
- Hybrid or composite membranes combining 2D materials with polymers or other frameworks

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Membranes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
