Dear Colleagues,
Kidney injury covers a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from acute and potentially reversible damage to progressive chronic kidney disease and irreversible organ failure. Renal replacement therapy and transplantation have advanced considerably over the past decades. Nevertheless, kidney injury is frequently detected late, recovery remains difficult to predict and therapeutic options for restoring organ function are limited. Additionally, patient care is still less individualized than current knowledge would allow.
This Special Issue, “Kidney Injury and Recovery: From Experimental Research to Individualized Patient Care”, addresses this unmet need by bringing together research across the field. Experimental and clinical studies investigating the molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms underlying renal injury and regeneration are welcome. This includes ex vivo models, organoids and in vivo studies, as well as translational research connecting experimental findings with clinical application.
Particular focus lies on emerging technologies for kidney preservation, assessment and repair. Relevant topics include the following:
- Machine perfusion
- Advanced organ preservation strategies
- Therapeutic interventions during ex vivo perfusion
- Biomarker-guided graft assessment
- Organ reconditioning prior to transplantation
Furthermore, studies addressing ischemia–reperfusion injury, delayed graft function, graft recovery and long-term transplant outcomes are especially encouraged.
Clinical trials, observational studies and patient-centered research are equally within the scope of this Special Issue. Topics of interest include the following:
- Individualized treatment strategies
- Recovery trajectories
- Shared decision-making
- Symptom burden
- Quality of life
- Long-term patient outcomes
By combining experimental research, translational technologies, transplantation science and clinical care, this Special Issue may contribute to a more integrated understanding of kidney injury and support the development of personalized strategies for renal recovery and organ repair.
Original research articles, clinical and experimental studies, systematic reviews, narrative reviews, perspectives and methodological contributions are invited. Submissions from researchers and clinicians working in nephrology, transplantation medicine, surgery, intensive care medicine, regenerative medicine and biomedical engineering are welcome.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
