Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid evolution of imaging technologies and increasing demands for high-performance visual systems underscore the critical role of optimization methods. By formulating image processing tasks—such as denoising, reconstruction, classification, and compression—as structured optimization problems, researchers can achieve significant improvements in accuracy, efficiency, and applicability. The Special Issue “Mathematical Optimization Methods in Image Processing” seeks to showcase cutting-edge research that bridges mathematical rigor with practical impact, fostering further advancements in intelligent image processing systems.
We warmly invite you to contribute to this Special Issue, which aims to present high-quality original research articles that highlight both theoretical advances and practical applications of optimization methodologies in addressing complex challenges within image processing. We welcome contributions that demonstrate innovative mathematical models, algorithmic improvements, and real-world implementations across a variety of domains. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Convex and non-convex optimization in image restoration;
- Heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms for image segmentation;
- Optimization in feature extraction and selection;
- Computational efficiency and scalability in image processing;
- Applications in medical imaging, remote sensing, and real-time vision systems;
- Machine learning-driven optimization techniques;
- Robust and adaptive optimization models for noisy or incomplete data;
- Multi-objective optimization for image enhancement and analysis.
We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Mathematics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
