Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue explores the critical issue of desertification in Earth’s drylands, a pressing environmental challenge in arid and semi-arid regions. Desertification, driven by factors such as climate change, deforestation, overgrazing, and unsustainable agricultural practices, threatens biodiversity, food security, and water resources, impacting millions of people globally. As climate change intensifies, the need for sustainable land management and restoration efforts in these vulnerable regions becomes increasingly urgent. In light of growing global challenges, this Special Issue presents a comprehensive analysis of desertification's causes, consequences, and most effective strategies for addressing it.

The issue examines, but is not limited to, various facets of desertification and highlights urgent actions to mitigate its effects:

  • Drivers of desertification;
  • Restoration and rehabilitation strategies;
  • Sustainable land management practices;
  • Policy and governance;
  • Climate change and adaptation.

This Special Issue calls for a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach to combat desertification, stressing the importance of science, policy, and community engagement in fostering sustainable, climate-resilient drylands that can support both people and ecosystems for generations to come.

Kind regards

Dr. Humberto Barbosa
Guest Editor
