XV Urban Geography Colloquium

The Department of Geography of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Urban Geography Group of the Association of Spanish Geographers (AGE), organise the XV Colloquium of Urban Geography under the slogan "The capitalist reconfiguration of urban spaces: transformations and inequalities".

After two decades of intense real estate and urban growth at the turn of the century and the subsequent constructive paralysis, new processes of urban reconfiguration are taking place in Spain, which makes us focus our attention on the inherent changes of the reorganisation of capitalism.

The internationalisation of the real estate market, the emergence of new agents that promote large urban projects or that contribute to consolidate the tourist functions of the city, the modification of the role of cities in global urban networks, the rents increase, the development of rehabilitation, etc. introduce a huge complexity in the current urban landscape. This is produced in a context of increasing inequalities and social conflicts, population aging, mobility and migration, environmental problems, the depopulation of many small and medium cities, gender perspectives and feminism demands.

Such a complex and disparate outlook of the current situation requires a soothe analysis of the processes and urban dynamics, in order to deepen the reflection on the city model that is being developed and the study of the emerging responses from the citizenship and public powers.

In this context, the XV Colloquium of Urban Geography aims to be a tool of comprehension of the current situation of the city from an approach that encompasses the concerns and geographical perspectives and other related disciplines. Therefore, we intend to direct special attention to social conflicts, the increase of urban inequalities, the functional and morphological changes of the city and the new urban dynamics, both from the perspective of a better knowledge of the current situation as well as from the social response and public management.

Hence, theoretical, methodological and cases studies contributions are welcome, and especially those that take into account different scalar perspectives, among which we would like to highlight the insular ones.
