Indoors and Outdoors Content-Based Localization

Dear Colleagues,

In the era of the abundance of information and content sharing, a strong need for geo-locating an event from images or videos without GPS information is constantly emerging. Citizen journalism, fact-checkers, climate change, and ecology organisations, as well as law enforcement organisations fighting criminal activities and trafficking, all need the localization of captured content in order to save lives or debunk misinformation. This requires solutions for both indoor and outdoor scenes. The proposed approaches may provide different levels of location granularity (continent, country, region, city etc.) or create “identifier sets”—i.e., clusters that can be matched across multiple videos and scenes.

The goal of this Special Issue is to invite high-quality, state-of-the-art research papers that deal with challenging issues of content-based geolocation. Topics of interest include:

• Computer vision for indoor objects matching and retrieval;
• Location-specific object analysis and retrieval;
• Image-based architecture and design classification;
• Human-related location markers (appearance, fashion, activities etc.);
• Outdoor landmarks detection and matching;
• Location-specific vegetation and animal classification;
• Image/video and weather data correlation approaches;
• Audio analysis for localization hint extraction.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
