Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are electronic devices that heat a liquid and produce an aerosol that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals, some of which may be harmful. Since 2014, e-cigarettes have been the most commonly used nicotine or tobacco product among U.S. youth, raising concerns about increasing youth addiction to nicotine and the risk of future cigarette smoking and its associated harms. At the same time, e-cigarettes may reduce health risks for smokers (combustible tobacco product users) who switch to e-cigarettes. Many questions remain about the health effects of e-cigarettes, patterns of use among youth, young adults, and older adults, and the effects of policies on e-cigarette and cigarette use, etc. This Special Issue will focus on the public health implications of e-cigarettes.

The issue invites original research articles presenting quantitative and/or qualitative results about the implications of e-cigarettes. Articles studying populations in the U.S. and other countries are welcome. Some examples of topics of interest include:

  • Patterns of e-cigarette use and changes in e-cigarette use over time.
  • E-cigarette use and health outcomes.
  • Association between e-cigarette use and use of cigarettes, other nicotine and tobacco products, and other substances (e.g., cannabis, alcohol, etc.).
  • Relative toxicity and/or risk of e-cigarettes compared to other nicotine and tobacco products, including traditional combustible tobacco products, traditional smokeless products, and novel nicotine delivery products.
  • Impact of public health policies on e-cigarette use.

Disclaimer: We will not accept research funded in part or full by any tobacco companies in this Special Issue. For more details, please check: https://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/15/12/2831/htm.
