Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The relationship between internet use and mental health and well-being has become an increasingly important area of study in recent years. With the exponential growth of internet use and the increasing prevalence of social media and other online platforms, it has become crucial to understand how these technologies impact our mental and physical health. While the internet and social media provide many benefits, including improved communication, access to information, and opportunities for self-expression, there are also potential negative consequences associated with excessive use. Thus, it is essential to study the complex interplay between internet use and mental health and well-being in order to better understand the potential risks and benefits of these technologies and develop effective strategies for promoting healthy use.

This Special Issue of the journal will focus on the research aimed at studying the relationship between internet and social media use and well-being and mental health. We welcome submissions from researchers in a variety of fields, including psychology, sociology, communication, and computer science, as well as from interdisciplinary perspectives. We hope that this Special Issue will provide valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working to understand and promote well-being and mental health in the digital age.

Possible specific focuses that authors could write about include:

  • Effects of social media use on psychological well-being, e.g., self-esteem and body image;
  • Predicting and understanding the impact of social media use on mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety;
  • Effects of internet use on sleep and fatigue;
  • The impact of internet and social media use on relationships and social interactions;
  • Internet, smartphone, and social media addiction;
  • The relationship between social media use and cognitive processes such as memory and attention;
  • The role of online communities in promoting mental health and well-being;
  • Online harassment and cyberbullying and their relationship to mental health;
  • Relevant mediators and moderators of the relationship between internet and social media use and mental health.
