Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to present the Special Issue titled “Current Research on Sleep and Public Health”.
A “healthy” sleep is a key element for a healthy life. However, in recent decades, it has been observed that an important impairment of sleep, due to sleep disorders, such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea, and to the burden of sleep deprivation. Sleep-related problems can affect people of all ages and socioeconomic levels with relevant direct and indirect costs for healthcare systems.
Altered sleep can have an important impact on several aspects of daily life. Pathological sleep is significantly associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality mainly due to cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. However, people with altered sleep can experience daytime symptoms such as sleepiness, fatigue, impaired attention and mood alterations, with severe impact on family, social and occupational life.
It is worth noticing that the link between sleep alterations and daily life conditions is bidirectional. In this perspective, the relation between sleep and public health is fundamental for the individual and global health. Good sleep means good health and vice versa.
This Special Issue aims to investigate different elements of sleep with respect to public health, with a specific focus on the following aspects: (1) to investigate the molecular and biological pathways involved in different conditions characterized by a pathological sleep; (2) to unveil the impact of sleep and sleep disorders on public health, in order to improve the health of people and their communities; (3) to assess the bidirectional link between physiological and pathological sleep and the environment.
The Special Issue will welcome original experimental studies, systemic review, meta-analysis as well as narrative reviews addressing the topic of the bidirectional link between physiological and pathological sleep and public health.
