Dear Colleagues,
Sepsis and septic shock remain among the most significant causes of mortality and long-term morbidity in intensive care units worldwide. Despite advancements in medical science, the heterogeneity of the host response and the rapid evolution of pathogen profiles continue to challenge standardized treatment protocols.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for discussing the latest clinical breakthroughs and persistent hurdles in sepsis management. We are particularly interested in exploring the paradigm shift from one-size-fits-all approaches to individualized therapy, tailored to the unique physiological and immunological profile of each patient.
A critical focus of this issue is the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance, which complicates empirical therapy and necessitates innovative stewardship strategies. Furthermore, the clinical landscape has been reshaped by the recognition of viral sepsis, underscoring the need for improved diagnostic differentiation and targeted antiviral interventions.
We also invite contributions regarding novel technological advancements, including the integration of artificial intelligence for early detection, bedside point-of-care testing and advanced hemodynamic monitoring tools. Furthermore, this Special Issue highlights the role of advanced biomarkers in prognostic stratification and the development of experimental therapies from immunomodulation to novel pharmacological agents that seek to bridge the gap between laboratory research and clinical bedside care.

- Precision medicine and the role of novel biomarkers in sepsis.
- Management of septic shock in the era of multi-drug resistant organisms.
- Experimental therapies and innovative clinical trials in sepsis.
- Pathophysiology and clinical outcomes of viral sepsis.
- Individualized therapy and host-response modulation.
- Digital health and AI-driven decision support systems in the ICU.
We invite researchers and clinicians to submit original research, comprehensive reviews, and case reports that contribute to a deeper understanding of these complex conditions and pave the way for more effective clinical therapies.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
