Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transition towards climate-neutral energy systems requires the rapid development, integration, and deployment of hydrogen technologies across multiple sectors of the economy. As countries pursue ambitious decarbonization targets, hydrogen is increasingly recognized as a strategic energy vector capable of supporting renewable energy integration, industrial transformation, clean mobility, long-duration energy storage, and sector coupling within future resilient energy systems.

This Special Issue, titled “Hydrogen Horizons: Advances in Hydrogen Technologies and Systems from ICH2 2026”, is associated with the International Conference on Hydrogen Horizons (ICH2 2026), an international forum dedicated to hydrogen technologies, innovation, and collaboration across the full hydrogen value chain. Organized within the framework of the H2 Green Valley Agenda, a major Portuguese initiative focused on advancing a large-scale green hydrogen ecosystem, the conference aims to connect scientific research, industrial development, and institutional perspectives on the future of hydrogen.

This Special Issue seeks to gather high-quality original research articles and review papers addressing recent advances in hydrogen technologies and systems, with particular emphasis on the challenges associated with large-scale deployment, systems integration, safety, sustainability, and real-world implementation. Contributions covering the full hydrogen value chain are welcome, including hydrogen production pathways, storage and transport technologies, infrastructure development, hydrogen end-use applications, integrated energy systems, Power-to-X solutions, techno-economic assessment, policy and regulatory frameworks, safety and risk assessment, and societal and environmental dimensions of hydrogen deployment.

In line with the objectives of ICH2 2026 and the H2 Green Valley Agenda, this Special Issue aims to promote interdisciplinary discussion and strengthen the connection between scientific advances and practical implementation. By bringing together contributions from researchers, engineers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, this Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive perspective on current developments and emerging opportunities shaping the future of hydrogen technologies and sustainable energy systems.

Following the conference, selected contributions presented at ICH2 2026 will be invited by the Conference Scientific Committee to submit extended paper versions for consideration in this Special Issue. Invitations will be based on the scientific quality and relevance of the contributions within the different thematic areas of the conference. All submitted manuscripts will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Hydrogen is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
