Dear Colleagues,
Underground mining of coal and minerals fundamentally disturbs the natural groundwater system. Resource extraction, long-term dewatering, and mining-induced fracturing redistribute pore pressure, create hydraulic connections between confined and unconfined aquifers, and mobilize large volumes of water along fault and fracture networks. These disturbances give rise to a range of water-related hazards—most critically water inrush and catastrophic mine flooding, but also groundwater-level drawdown, land subsidence, and contamination of shallow drinking-water sources. As mining depth and intensity continue to increase, groundwater dynamics have become a central influence on the safety of mining operations and the sustainable use of water resources in mining regions. Understanding the mechanisms, monitoring, and management of groundwater under conditions of mining disturbance is therefore of major scientific and societal importance.
This Special Issue will collect papers (original research articles and review papers) that give insights about the mechanisms, monitoring, and prevention of groundwater-related hazards in mining environments, as well as that advance integrated strategies for the safe and sustainable groundwater management in mining areas.
This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the following themes:
- Mechanisms of groundwater flow, pressure evolution, and multiphase transport in mined rock masses and fault/fracture networks;
- Monitoring, numerical modeling, and early-warning of mine water inrush and other groundwater-related hazards;
- Groundwater protection, recharge, and sustainable utilization in mining areas.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
