Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Power systems are undergoing a radical transformation driven by the rapid integration of renewable energy sources, decentralization of generation sources and digitalization of the system infrastructure. These changes are creating new technical and operational challenges for modern power systems, challenges that can be addressed through advanced methodologies, including design and optimization. Recent advances in optimization algorithms, artificial intelligence and data-driven modelling support this view, opening new opportunities for research and industrial applications. Innovative design and optimization approaches are essential to support decarbonization goals, with the integration of renewable energy sources and all related emerging aspects that will shape modern power systems. This research area is therefore highly timely and significant for both academia and industry.

This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to the design and optimization of modern power systems. We consider original research articles, review papers, and case studies addressing theoretical developments, computational methods, simulation-based analyses, and practical applications in power system engineering. Contributions that integrate emerging design technologies, advanced optimization techniques, and real-world perspectives are particularly welcome.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Optimization methods for power system planning, operation, and control;
  • Design and management of smart grids, microgrids, and active distribution networks;
  • Optimal integration of renewable energy sources and distributed energy resources;
  • Demand response, energy communities, and prosumer-based energy management;
  • Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data-driven approaches for power systems;
  • Multi-objective, stochastic, robust, and real-time optimization techniques;
  • Techno-economic and environmental assessment of power system solutions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electricity is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
