Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The international monetary system faces several threats. Increasing de-dollarization among the BRICS countries, induced by the weaponization of the dollar and skyrocketing US debt, and the emergence of alternative transnational payment infrastructures is paralleled by a renewed attempt to make the US dollar the pivot of a new international order. There is also a reliance on innovative financial instruments, like stablecoins, to try and resist and contrast the experiments that seek to explore and implement Central Bank Digital Currencies. How can financial innovation be a feature of resilience and stability instead of potentially becoming a source of further imbalances and instability? What kind of monetary and financial order reform is likely to decrease the risk of macroeconomic instability and provide a stable framework for the provision of global public goods and the pursuit of healthy public finance? Fifty-five years after the end of the Bretton Woods regime in 1971, this Special Issue wishes to contribute to the ongoing debate on the flaws of the current international economic and monetary order and suggest directions to be explored to reshape it.
