Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The hospitality industry has endured major turning points and various crises in the recent past, but the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are unique among these. Hospitality has been one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic, as both domestic and international travel was limited, and the industry’s sensitivity to external shocks combined with high fixed assets and costs compared to other sectors made it even more vulnerable, Both during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the impact of the crisis on the functioning of the hotel industry during the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has already been the subject of several studies, the longer-term economic consequences for the industry have not yet been fully investigated. The recovery from the unprecedented impact of COVID-19 will require equally unprecedented measures, as it relies on the ability to control the disease and the macroeconomic effectiveness of policies to strengthen overall economic recovery. This is essential for the hospitality industry, which needs support to recover from the pandemic. Hence, this Special Issue will cover the analysis of the hotel market during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, taking into account the adaptation of the industry, with particular emphasis on the short- and long-term impact of the pandemic on its business operations and asset-management strategies, industry resilience, crisis strategies, industry reconstruction strategies, human and social capital, the experiences of consumers and employees, rebuilding the trust of stakeholders in the industry, investments in the hotel market, and dynamics and prospects for its development. The purpose of this Economies Special Issue is, therefore, to examine the state of the international hotel industry during the pandemic and explore forecasts of its development in a post-pandemic world.
