Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, South Korea has been confronted with critical demographic and socio-economic challenges, including a sharp decline in birth rates, the risk of population extinction in provincial cities, and one of the fastest aging processes worldwide. Scholars have consistently warned that if these complex issues remain unresolved, the nation’s long-term sustainability may be at risk. While such structural problems cannot be solved overnight, numerous local initiatives and academic efforts have emerged to address them. In particular, research on local entrepreneurship, marketing, ESG practices, regional economic revitalization, tourism, and population attraction strategies has played a vital role in exploring potential solutions.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for advancing theoretical and practical insights into how local and regional strategies can mitigate demographic decline and promote sustainable development. By aligning with the journal’s scope, it highlights interdisciplinary perspectives that connect management, economics, social sciences, and regional studies. The Special Issue particularly encourages contributions that not only identify the challenges of population decline and regional revitalization but also propose innovative frameworks for fostering sustainable growth at both local and national levels.
In this Special Issue, both original research articles and review papers are welcome. Suggested themes include, but are not limited to:∙
- Entrepreneurship and start-up ecosystems in regional contexts
- ESG-driven approaches to sustainable regional growth
- Innovation and digital transformation in local economies
- Policy frameworks for addressing demographic decline and population mobility

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-anonymized peer-review process. Economies is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
