Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The relentless demand for rapid, reliable, and sensitive detection of chemical analytes has positioned chemical sensors at the forefront of analytical chemistry. From ensuring food safety and monitoring industrial processes to safeguarding environmental health, the need for real-time, on-site, and cost-effective analytical tools has never been more urgent. While conventional instrumentation offers high precision, it often remains inaccessible for field deployment due to cost, size, and operational complexity. This is where nanomaterial-based chemical sensors emerge as a transformative paradigm.

Nanomaterials—ranging from metal oxides, carbon species (graphene, carbon nanotubes), and metallic nanoparticles to advanced metal–organic frameworks and MXenes—possess unique physicochemical properties. Their high surface-to-volume ratios, tunable electronic structures, and exceptional catalytic activity provide unprecedented sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, the ability to engineer these materials at the molecular level allows for the miniaturization of sensing platforms without compromising performance, enabling the detection of target species ranging from toxic gases and heavy metal ions to pesticide residues and foodborne pathogens.

This Special Issue, “Nanomaterial-Based Chemical Sensors for Food, Industrial and Environmental Application”, aims to capture the current state-of-the-art and future trajectories of this rapidly evolving field. We seek contributions that address critical challenges: the selective detection of analytes in complex matrices, the mitigation of environmental interference, and the translation of laboratory breakthroughs into robust, field-deployable devices. For food applications, this includes sensors for spoilage indicators, allergens, and adulterants. In the industrial sector, we are interested in monitoring hazardous gases, process control parameters, and volatile organic compounds. Environmentally, we invite studies on sensors for water, soil, and air quality monitoring, focusing on emerging contaminants and persistent pollutants.

We encourage submissions covering fundamental material synthesis and characterization, novel transduction mechanisms (optical, electrochemical, piezoelectric), and the fabrication of integrated sensing systems. By bridging the gap between advanced materials chemistry and practical sensor engineering, this collection will serve as a valuable resource for the community. We cordially invite researchers to contribute their cutting-edge work and collectively chart the future of chemical sensing.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
