Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Micro- and nanoscale biomedical systems are a fast-developing area in biomedical engineering, and such biotechnologies have been developed for various purposes, including diagnostics, prosthetics, therapeutics, sensing, and monitoring. These systems can be applied to human tissues and organs in vivo or in vitro. Their functionalities include surgical auxiliary, drug delivery, anti-microbial effects, life support, implants, transplants, health care, and even energy production. In recent decades, the development of micro- and nanoscale systems has notably expanded the frontier of engineering and biotechnologies for human wellbeing. Whether a single device or an integrated system, these innovations allow researchers and clinical staff to observe and study the physiology and pathology of human bodies. Furthermore, they provide better opportunities for advancing the current diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for illness and diseases.
Micro- and nanometer-scale systems usually require novel designs to be integrated into the default working environment. The designs can be inspired by, or imitate, real biological systems or environments. Another issue is presented by their miniaturization and the need for associated fabrication techniques to realize designs and concepts. Therefore, challenges remain regarding tailoring emerging micro-/nanotechnologies for biologically sensitive and specific functions. A combination of approaches drawn from various engineering disciplines with strong foundations in science will help to rapidly devise new technologies in the field of bioengineering.
We encourage researchers to report their groundbreaking work in this Special Issue. Review articles and original research papers relating to key issues in basic or applied research, materials, or biomedical applications in general are welcome.
Topics of interest include:
- 3D or novel platforms for in vitro cell, tissue, or organ cultures;
- Micro-/nanosystems for therapy, diagnosis, and drug delivery;
- Novel micro/nano real-time or offline biosensing technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomedicines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
