Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue, titled "Artificial Intelligence and Students’ Mental Health", focuses on exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and students’ mental health development, aiming to collect cutting-edge research, practical cases, and theoretical discussions in this field. In recent years, the global digitization transformation has accelerated the penetration of AI in education—from intelligent tutoring systems to campus mental health management platforms. At the same time, students (especially adolescents and college students) are facing increasing mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, and academic burnout, with traditional mental health support often limited by factors such as insufficient numbers of professionals and delayed intervention. This context makes the integration of AI and students’ mental health support both an urgent need and a key research direction, while also raising new questions about technology application boundaries, data privacy, and ethical norms.
Over the past decade, AI has shown unique potential in student mental health work. For example, natural language processing (NLP) can analyze students’ text expressions to identify early mental health risk signals; machine learning models can predict individual mental health trends based on multi-dimensional data; and virtual psychological companions can provide accessible emotional support for students who are reluctant to seek face-to-face help. However, practical application still faces multiple challenges—such as the accuracy of AI judgment in complex psychological scenarios, the balance between data collection and student privacy protection, and the complementarity (rather than substitution) of AI tools with human psychological counseling.
To address these issues, we invite submissions covering (but not limited to) the following topics:
- Development and validation of AI-driven assessment tools for students’ mental health—not only including tools for the identification of mental health risks but also encompassing tools for measuring key influencing factors of mental health;
- Design and effect evaluation of AI-based personalized mental health intervention programs;
- Ethical issues and regulatory frameworks in the application of AI in students’ mental health;
- Research on the acceptance and adaptation of AI mental health tools among students, teachers, and parents;
- Long-term impact assessment of AI intervention on students’ mental health literacy and psychological resilience.
By integrating interdisciplinary research results (from computer science, psychology, education, ethics, etc.), the aim of this Special Issue is to provide theoretical references and practical guidance for educators, mental health practitioners, and policy makers, as well as further promote the responsible, efficient, and human-centered application of AI in safeguarding students’ mental health.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Behavioral Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
