Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Researchers and professionals exploring the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into assessment are invited to contribute to this Special Issue dedicated to examining the transformative role of AI in the behavioral sciences. AI is reshaping assessment practices across diverse contexts, including psychology, cognitive science, education, clinical diagnostics, and human resources. From adaptive testing and automated scoring to large language models and real-time analytics, AI offers significant opportunities to achieve better assessment. It also raises ethical questions around bias, transparency, fairness, and data privacy.

This Special Issue explores the multifaceted impact of AI on assessment, highlighting both the opportunities it creates and the challenges it raises. This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary forum for discussing the latest research, methodologies, and applications of AI in assessment. It seeks to bring together theoretical analyses, empirical studies, and critical perspectives that deepen our understanding of how AI can support, challenge, or transform assessment practices related to human behavior and cognition.

We welcome contributions that investigate the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of AI-based assessment tools and studies demonstrating their effectiveness and limitations in real-world contexts. Papers addressing ethical considerations in AI-based assessments are also encouraged. We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, and theoretical papers. Topic of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • AI applications in psychological and cognitive assessment;
  • AI-driven adaptive testing;
  • Automated analysis of behavioral data;
  • Interdisciplinary methods combining machine learning and psychometrics;
  • Applications of natural language processing and large language models in assessment;
  • Ethical considerations in AI-based assessments;
  • Case studies demonstrating AI implementation in real-world assessment contexts.

We look forward to receiving your submissions and fostering interdisciplinary dialog on this timely topic.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Behavioral Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
