Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Microorganisms are naturally present in the air of almost all environments existing on earth. The transport of microorganisms in the air represents an important pathway for the dissemination of microorganisms in both natural and manmade environments. Knowledge of the biodiversity of microbial agents is a key issue in understanding the behavior of the airborne microbial community, the transfer between different areas, and in clarifying their role in the development of the diseases in which they are involved.

The composition of bioaerosols in species and in microbial compounds has been increasingly investigated in recent decades. The corresponding research effort has led to the publication of a growing number of studies that have made it possible to make progress on the methods and strategies to be implemented to measure biodiversity, and also to improve knowledge of the mechanisms involved in pathologies due to exposure to bioaerosols.

However, knowledge is not yet sufficiently established to fully understand the mechanisms involved and to act more effectively on limiting the effects of bioaerosol exposure. Thus, biodiversity in bioaerosols remains a crucial research topic for public and occupational health.

The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together the current knowledge on microbial diversity in bioaerosols and to provide perspectives for further research on such an issue. It aims in particular to gather articles on, but not limited to, the following subjects regarding biodiversity in bioaerosols:

  • Methods and strategies for investigations;
  • Description in different environments;
  • Identification of the main determinants (season, geographical localization, impact of global warming, etc.);
  • The relationship between the composition of bioaerosols in species and human health;
  • The usefulness of biodiversity data for mitigation of the exposure to bioaerosols.

Atmosphere is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
