Perspectives of Acoustics
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We warmly invite submissions to this Special Issue of Arts, ‘Perspectives of Acoustics’. The aim of this Special Issue is to create an interdisciplinary space for reflection on sound in its artistic, aesthetic, perceptual, technological, and cultural dimensions. It is intended for researchers and practitioners for whom sound constitutes a central or significant point of reference in scholarly, creative, artistic, or engineering work.
This Special Issue adopts a cross-disciplinary outlook, bringing together perspectives from the humanities, the sciences, engineering, media studies, and artistic practice. We welcome contributions from established scholars as well as early-career researchers, doctoral candidates, and artists who wish to present research findings, experimental projects, case studies, theoretical reflections, or innovative methodologies for working with sound.
We especially encourage submissions from the following:
- Technical and engineering acousticians (phonography, electroacoustics, architectural acoustics, environmental and industrial acoustics, computational acoustics);
- Sound engineers, recording directors, and audio producers interested in the technological and perceptual aspects of sound recording, mixing, and reproduction;
- Sound artists, composers, music theorists, experimental musicians, and performers exploring the relationships between space, timbre, perception, and artistic expression;
- Architects and urban designers for whom sound is a significant component of spatial function and social experience—from concert halls to urban soundscapes;
- Cultural theorists, philosophers, aestheticians, and media scholars analysing sound within the context of auditory experience, communication, posthumanism, affect theory, and immersive aesthetics;
- Psychologists, cognitive scientists, and auditory neuroscientists studying hearing, listening processes, attention, auditory memory, and the emotional dimensions of musical perception;
- Creators of sound technologies: Designers of equipment, audio systems, and solutions for spatial, immersive, binaural, and 3D sound;
- Developers of music software and sound interfaces who design tools supporting artistic creativity, acoustic research, and music-technology education;
- Students and doctoral candidates seeking an international platform for publication and scholarly or artistic exchange.
We welcome articles of an empirical, theoretical, methodological, or project-based nature (including research-creation), as well as contributions focusing on artistic practices and case studies. In contrast to strictly technical issues, this Special Issue will place particular emphasis on situating acoustics within art, aesthetics, and listening practices. Here, sound is understood not only as a physical phenomenon, but also as:
- A medium of expression, affect, and cultural identity;
- A creative material in composition, performance, installation, and intermedial practices;
- A factor shaping spatial, perceptual, and dramaturgical relations;
- An element of listening practices and auditory experience;
- A tool for communication, immersion, and audience engagement;
- A philosophical and phenomenological category.
The aim of this Special Issue is to provide an open and inspiring forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience among those who study, theorise, design, record, analyse, compose, or simply listen attentively—for each of these acts forms an essential part of the acoustic world.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Arts is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
