IoT for Smart Cities—Cybersecurity Challenges and Solutions

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Advances in ICT have contributed to the digitization of urban services, promising a more efficient use of resources and a better quality of life for the citizens. Smart sensors and wireless communication offer a rich supply of real time data. AI-based control algorithms may improve the decisions one can derive from these data.

The flipside of digitization is increases in the attack surface. The data collected may intrude too far on citizens’ privacy. Targeted manipulation of the data collected by sensors—including manipulations of the environment sensed—may lead to decisions by the control system that are detrimental to quality of life. Software in smart devices may be manipulated or may suffer from vulnerabilities that can be exploited by adversaries.

Some defenses, such as cryptographic protection of communication involving resource-constrained devices have been researched at length. Abstract studies on old issues in new forms are thus of limited benefit for Smart Cities. Lessons from field trials, however, would advance the state of the art. Some areas, such as adversarial machine learning, are still relatively young and it would be of interest to put them into a Smart City context. Privacy enhancing technologies support a privacy-friendly use of data but may decrease the quality of decisions based on sanitized data. Work on analyzing the trade-offs between the various quality-of-service aspects of Smart City services addresses this issue. Research on how cultural context influences acceptable choices between competing criteria is also relevant.

This Special Issue invites contributions on all aspects of cybersecurity and privacy in the Smart City. It wants to take the field beyond an analysis of challenges and requirements and is particularly interested in submissions that build on substantial field trials.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
