Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue aims to bring together inspiring research on the recent progress and future challenge in the wireless network.
Wireless technologies have become ubiquitous in the modern world, with each having its own purpose, depending on the circumstances. Recent attention has been focused on 5G mobile data networks being deployed in a number of countries. End users, businesses, and telecommunications system operators will benefit from 5G in a variety of ways. This includes an increase in speed, improved capabilities, and services that are tailored for the new generation of connected smart devices.
Beyond just 5G, advancements in a wide range of wireless communication technologies are now giving industries new opportunities to increase visibility, improve operational efficiency and accelerate automating. Common technologies such as WiFi and Bluetooth, but also lesser-known technologies such as Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) or Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, have been significantly enhanced. These next-generation wireless technologies will pave the way for the next stage of the communications revolution.
However, even though these technologies offer many advantages over wired networks, both in terms of mobility and portability as well as economically, wireless networks face different challenges. One of the biggest challenges wireless networks face is the demanding transmission requirements such as issues in the system design and the device costs. Such challenges have been addressed by research in the fields of advanced photonics technologies, digital/analog radio over fiber (D/A-RoF) technologies and optical wireless communication (OWC). In addition, the security of wireless networks has always been the focus of attention. Wireless network security can be divided into radio frequency security, terminal security, network access, and data security. Future competition in the WiFi market will gradually shift to management platforms that use machine learning techniques to predict network behavior and automate more tasks.
In this Special Issue, we aim to collect all of the aspects surrounding wireless networks, including, but not limited to, the following fields:
- Privacy and anonymity;
- Attacks and threats characterization;
- Intrusion detection and prevention;
- Wireless networks resilience;
- 5G and beyond wireless networks;
- Machine learning for wireless networks;
If you are interested in this topic, you are welcome to contribute to this Special Issue, and we look forward to receiving your submissions soon.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue
- Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
- Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
- Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
- External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
- e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
