Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to explore current and future applications in the field of interoperability and the utilization of secondary data in dentistry. The increasing adoption of digital technologies and electronic health records has generated a vast amount of data, offering new opportunities for improving dental care. However, data availability and data linkage (e.g., lack of syntactic and semantic interoperability) are still considered to be the main obstacles for harnessing the potential of data in dentistry.

This Special Issue invites contributions from researchers, clinicians, and industry professionals working at the intersection of dentistry, health care informatics, and data science. The issue will showcase innovative approaches, methodologies, and case studies that address the challenges associated with data interoperability and the utilization of secondary data in the dental domain.

Topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Standardization of dental data formats and terminologies for improved interoperability;
  • Integration of electronic health records (EHRs) and dental imaging systems;
  • Data mining and analytics for secondary data analysis in dentistry;
  • Clinical decision support systems leveraging secondary data;
  • Privacy and security considerations in utilizing secondary dental data;
  • Collaborative research efforts and data sharing initiatives in dentistry;
  • Application of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in dental data analysis;
  • Real-world implementation and evaluation of interoperability solutions in dental practice.

By bringing together diverse perspectives and cutting-edge research in this Special Issue, we aim to advance the understanding and application of interoperability and secondary data in dentistry. The outcomes will contribute to informing advocacy efforts and may lead to enhanced patient care, more informed clinical decision-making, and the development of innovative dental technologies and services.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
