Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue is devoted to the behavior of the reinforcement crossing interfaces between concretes cast at different times (cold joints) or along a natural crack. The behavior of this interface is crucial for the behavior of the composite members. It is influenced by the type of reinforcement (reinforcing bars or other types of connectors), by their length, by the interface roughness, etc., as well as by the type of loading (monotonic, repeated, or cyclic loading).
However, the behavior of the reinforcement has not been systematically investigated, the stress has not been measured, or the information is not sufficient for conclusions regarding the influence of the important above-mentioned parameters. In any case, the authors should demonstrate that the quantification of the interface resistance and the behavior of the reinforcement are predominant aspects of their works, with the aim of implementing new ideas. In our humble opinion, the participation of leading scientists is really important to guide the reader and new scientists and practitioners towards new designs of interfaces. In this way, it will be possible to reinforce existing structures, leading to more sustainable constructions and the designing of new and more resistant structures. This can be useful both in the design of new structures and of interventions to existing ones. Particularly welcome will be works that validate, at the experimental level, preliminary numerical simulations, while mathematical explanations could further enhance the results of the research. Also, the numerical validation of the experimental results is welcome. In situ applications and case studies are considered on the same level as laboratory measurements, although we imagine that case studies will not be the most frequent form of published papers. With respect to the future generations of engineers designing new or interventions to existing structures, the importance of the behavior of the interfaces and the decisive role of the reinforcement should not be underestimated.
