AI-Enhanced Problem Solving: Exploring the Potential of Artificial Intelligence Conversation

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Special Issue on “AI-Enhanced Problem Solving: Exploring the Potential of Artificial Intelligence Conversation” aims to establish artificial intelligence conversation (AIC) as a transformative methodology for modern problem solving. Building on conventional methods like brainstorming, Delphi, focus groups, and World café, AIC leverages the power of generative AI technologies to address longstanding limitations in scalability, time efficiency, and reliance on human expertise.

Focus

This Special Issue focuses on AIC as a next-generation methodology that integrates AI into structured problem solving; the Guest Editors seek contributions that examine its theoretical foundations, methodological innovations, and real-world applications across diverse fields such as healthcare, manufacturing, education, and public policy.

Scope

The Special Issue will explore AIC’s potential to enhance creativity, insight generation, and decision-making while addressing the challenges of algorithmic bias, data security, and ethical considerations. By incorporating interdisciplinary perspectives, the Special Issue will span theoretical frameworks, empirical studies, and critical assessments, providing a comprehensive understanding of AIC’s capabilities and limitations.

Purpose

The purpose of this Special Issue is to position AIC as a significant development in problem-solving methodologies that intends to inspire innovation, spark interdisciplinary dialogue, and establish a roadmap for integrating AI into conventional frameworks. This exploration is timely, given the increasing reliance on AI for addressing complex and data-rich problems, and seeks to drive future research and implementation of AIC across industries.

Relationship to the Existing Literature

This Special Issue builds on the existing literature that examines both traditional problem-solving techniques and AI applications, filling a critical gap by integrating the two. While methods like Delphi and brainstorming have well-documented strengths, they face constraints in terms of scalability and expert dependency. Similarly, AI research often focuses on specific applications rather than its role in structured problem solving.

This Special Issue contributes to the literature by:

  • Advancing methodologies—introducing a novel, scalable approach that enhances existing techniques with generative AI;
  • Addressing practical challenges—providing empirical evidence and case studies that demonstrate AIC’s utility across sectors;
  • Investigating critical perspectives—exploring ethical, technical, and societal challenges associated with AIC, thus fostering responsible adoption and innovation.

Through these contributions, this Special Issue positions AIC as a bridge between established practices and emerging AI capabilities, encouraging collaboration between academia and industry.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AI is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
