MDPI Open Insights: Academic Publishing Workshop Held at Nanyang Technological University, School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering on 23 September 2025

On 23 September 2025, MDPI Singapore had the privilege of conducting an Academic Publishing Workshop for postgraduate students at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The session was designed to equip students with the skills needed to successfully navigate the academic publishing process.

The workshop began with Dr. Amy Cham introducing open access publishing and MDPI. Her session gave students a foundational understanding of open science and how this model is shaping the future of research. Dr. Cham then guided participants through the fundamentals of writing and structuring an academic paper, covering key components from crafting a compelling abstract to organizing the main sections. This part of the workshop armed students with a clear, step-by-step approach to preparing their manuscripts.

The focus then shifted to Publication Ethics for Authors, a critical session led by Ms. Marijana Maric. She educated students on their ethical responsibilities, including avoiding plagiarism and ensuring proper citation practices. Her session emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity throughout the publishing process.

Ms. Maric’s session was particularly timely, sparking a lively Q&A on the use of Generative AI in academic writing. The discussion clarified that while AI tools can assist with language improvement or structuring, authors are ultimately responsible for their work's originality and integrity. The session underscored the importance of transparency, recommending that any use of AI be explicitly declared in the manuscript.

MDPI Singapore is dedicated to supporting the academic community in the region, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have collaborated with Nanyang Technological University. We look forward to future partnerships and to continuing our mission of empowering the next generation of researchers with the tools they need to share their work with the world.
