Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Outdoor acoustic surveillance plays a big role in our daily lives. Outdoor noises are a corollary to transports, industries and urbanization. Noise reduction and control are a primary concern of planning strategies, with noise mapping, action plans, etc., and motivate the growing interest for acoustic monitoring in smart cities. Outdoor sounds are also a unique source of information on their origin. Acoustic sensing can be used in applications such as monitoring activities in a surveyed area, localizing events by their acoustic footprint (accidents, shootings), and monitoring specific animal species. Finally, active acoustic sensing allows measuring atmospheric properties.

In general, these applications face some similar challenges and avenues for progress. Rapid changes are appearing in the collection of acoustic signals, with the emergence and spread of innovative sensors (e.g., directional, low-cost) and sensor systems (e.g., distributed sensing, with relay and fusion). Algorithmic signal processing is undergoing breakthroughs, with increases in dataset availability and in computing capacity, enabling advanced, fast, and reliable calculations. The outdoor environment is increasingly well documented, and its effect on the signals can be taken into account to improve sensing performance and/or decision aid.

This Special Issue aims at promoting high-quality papers on outdoor acoustic surveillance. Contributions may illustrate how the above emerging trends lead to research results in their application field, with original sensing approaches or innovative processing/modeling strategies. Review papers on the state-of-art on some applications are also very welcome, as spanning over the diversity of applications is an important objective of the Special Issue.

We cordially invite you to submit a high-quality research paper or review to this Special Issue, “Advances in Outdoor Acoustic Surveillance and Sensing”.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. J is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
