Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The existence of emerging organic contaminants (also known as contaminants of emerging concern, CECs) in Nature (e.g., air, water, soil) is an important environmental issue. Many of these molecules are designed to induce specific biological activities in targeted organisms. As a result, the presence of CECs and their structurally similar metabolites in the essential ingredients of life (e.g., air, water) may have unprecedented impacts on living biota. New methods need to be developed to remove/degrade these newly emerged classes of pollutants, as the conventional methods are reported to fail or be less efficient in these tasks. Despite the active involvement of the scientific community to address this situation in the last few decades, this important environmental issue is not fully addressed. Hence, recognizing the increasing importance of the above-mentioned environmental scenarios, the open-access journal ChemEngineering is hosting a Special Issue to showcase the most recent findings from environmental chemists regarding the removal/degradation of CECs from the natural environment. Topics of potential interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of novel methodologies to remove/degrade CECs from the natural environment;
  • Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs)—including UV-, ozone-, and catalyst-based techniques—to degrade/mineralize CECs;
  • Development of efficient membranes for the removal of CECs from the environment;
  • Mechanistic investigation of the degradation of CECs by various methods;
  • Laboratory models and/or real-world studies for the removal/remediation of CECs;
  • The fate/transformation (including mechanism) of CECs in Nature.
