Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

The breakthrough discovery of lead halide perovskite materials as an efficient converter of solar energy into electricity has changed the focus of the photovoltaic market. Novel materials with a tunable composition and a solar cell structure and an ease of fabrication have led to the rapid development of perovskite solar cells, currently endowed with the highest efficiencies of >25% with single junction perovskite solar cells and >29% with silicon/perovskite tandem solar cells.

In addition to the intrinsic efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells, novel perovskite or charge-transporting materials, non-toxic or lead-free perovskite, the compatibility between the different materials used in the cell, as well as their their environmental stability (humid conditions, oxygen and light exposure) and their stability under operating conditions represent the key areas of focus. Simultaneously, for the large-scale use of perovskite solar cells, we are witnessing increases in chemical engineering processes to synthesize materials and processes compatible with all layers of the cells—especially extremely sensitive halide perovskites—in addition to innovative methods for stable cell fabrication at ambient conditions, as well as scalable processes and techniques for the conformal deposition of perovskite onto a textured surface for tandem solar cells.  

In this context, this Special Issue aims to compile relevant contributions showing the potential novel materials, materials synthesis and thin-film deposition processes in chemical engineering based on the application of perovskite solar cells. Modeling and experimental manuscripts, as well as reviews dealing with the most significant processes in chemical engineering performed to fabricate perovskite solar cells, are particularly welcome.
