Biomass was launched in 2021, aiming at providing an open access reservoir of knowledge pertaining to the field of biomass and its harnessing. Over the last four years, the number of publications has climbed from 7 in 2021 to over 72 in 2024, reflecting the key role the journal was meant to play in the international scientific community. Four years after its birth, Biomass has been indexed in highly regarded databases, it has been tracked for an impact factor, and it has received a CiteScore of 4.2. Thus, as the field of biomass technology and valorization is continuously and rapidly expanding, transformed, and consolidated as a pillar of bioeconomy, it is time to update the initial aims and scope to clearly define the raison d’ être of the journal and to ensure that they align with the instrumental role that biomass will play within the circular economy.
  • Aims
Biomass (ISSN: 2673-8783) is an international open access journal covering biomass treatment, valorization, conversion, and biorefinery, and publishes review articles (reviews), original research papers (articles), and short communications. Its aim is to encourage scientists to publish their experimental and theoretical results in as much detail as possible. There are no restrictions on the maximum length of papers; however, reviews should provide new insights into the field rather than list available information from the literature. This could include new interpretations of existing data or the identification of areas of particular interest for further study. Full experimental details must be provided so that results can be reproduced. Likewise, full details and equation sets must be provided for studies involving modeling or simulation.
  • Scope
Biomass covers all aspects of bioenergy, biorefining for materials and/or energy, and the circular use of biogenic carbon in the form of biomass, focusing on chemical, biochemical, and engineering routes of biomass conversion and harnessing. The journal addresses the conversion of biomass, biowaste, residues, and byproducts into added-value materials and energy in the framework of contributing towards a sustainable, resource-efficient, and eco-friendly economy. The journal also covers aspects pertaining to the characterization of biomass, with a specific focus on conversion pathways and biorefining approaches. The journal does not accept studies on processes developed solely for waste treatment for destruction and/or elimination.
The scope of the journal includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • Biomass conversion;
  • Biomass valorization;
  • Biodigestion;
  • Circular economy;
  • Bioenergy policy;
  • Bioenergy;
  • Biorefining and value-added products.
